Second Dwelling. First-Rate Home.

Made to be a second dwelling, this new home has all the hallmarks of a flagship house.

What do you do with a spacious backyard left unused? In 2017, VIKON tackled this problem in the peaceful suburb of Sunnynook. The project involved creating a new dwelling behind an existing home, with features that not only rivalled the original, but surpassed it, making the most of its convenient, park-side location.

Working around the unique L-shaped existing building, we oversaw the main construction of the new build. The project called for extensive landscaping and exterior renovation, such as a rework of the driveway to accommodate more vehicles. Upon completion, the property had doubled its number of outdoor decks, and featured an elegantly implemented stepping stone path, connecting the two homes.

The new home was a two-storey build that housed five whole bedrooms and four bathrooms, in addition to a laundry room and tub room – more than even the existing building. This also ensured complete privacy and the guarantee that no one will find themselves queuing up for the toilet in the morning. The ground level featured an open floor plan to accommodate the kitchen, living, and dining spaces, allowing for spacious family living with convenient access to a range of facilities while fostering a sense of interconnectedness.

The building materials featured New Zealand’s premier product brands, ensuring long-lasting support. Featuring premium radiata pine weatherboard finished in a soft grey-white with a contrasting roof in antique black, the new build exudes a timeless aesthetic that has proven its endurance. Almost a decade on since its completion, the building still serves as a prime example of forward-thinking design within its neighbourhood, proving VIKON’s commitment to making buildings that not only last – but do so convincingly, and in style.
