New and Comfortable Art Classroom
To transform a collection of awkward and aging classrooms into new learning spaces, VIKON applied our expertise to lead the project.
One of our favourite school projects to have worked on was our classroom modification project for Dawson Primary School. We were tasked with the refurbishment of numerous relocated buildings in Block 3, with the goal of creating shared, open learning spaces.
Previously, the classrooms suffered from awkward foyer positioning, a lack of open teaching space, and general wear. VIKON followed the Ministry of Education-approved project plan to revitalise the aging space and transform the aging classrooms into modern and comfortable environments that facilitate learning.
Our work comprised of a total interior renovation of the affected buildings, encompassing the roof, walls, carpet, cabinets, and art sink. Significant structural work was also undertaken, such as new concrete reinforcement, foundation pads, and framing structures. This opened up the way to create flexible, open, and modular learning spaces, such as the merging of two separate classrooms.
In replacing the wall lining, we partnered with Nomadtika to deliver high quality Autex solutions. The new walls were finished in an eclectic range of modern tones, with a confident grey as the primary colour. End sections were a deep blue, while vibrant orange-red stripes boldly accented the centre.
Of course, the palette wouldn’t be complete without flooring. We worked with Hill Commercial Floors to deliver a contemporary flooring solution that was both comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. The pattern was evocative of both puzzle pieces and children’s bricks – a playfully cubic design that perfectly matched the new classroom’s tone. The backing colour was a weave of grey tones streaked with green, while the pattern colour was a very realistic grass shade.
After the structural, walls, and floors were complete, it was time to add the cabinets. Our in-house joinery team delivered an incredible art cabinet and two highly capable whiteboard units. The cabinet featured tall and low spaces, as well as a ten sliding trays – fit to accommodate a broad range of art supplies. Also present was the main sliding door, which opened to reveal an incredible amount of storage space.
Our internal team also played an important role in realising the art sink – the body of which we tailored to match the rest of the cabinetry – finished in a cool and simple white. The sink itself was a shiny, purpose-chosen unit made to handle the rigorous routine of art classrooms.
We are proud to have worked with Dawson Primary to deliver a broad range of classroom upgrades, making sure that the rooms are modern, effective, and comfortable learning spaces.
