Sunshine & Airflow in a Modernist Remuera Duplex

This architecturally unique duplex in Remuera was designed and built by VIKON with a unique purpose in mind. Specially designed to accommodate both the owner and their extended family, this project was realised by balancing both proximity and privacy.

The duplex spans two levels, with the dwellings taking on a side-by-side arrangement. While the units share a driveway, they each have a single-car garage. On the ground floor, both units feature a lounge, bedrooms, and outdoor space. Upstairs, the units feature generous open plan layouts, connecting the kitchen, living, and dining spaces.

Natural light & airiness were key focuses of this build, with the upper floor featuring an abundance of ceiling-to-floor windows, sliding doors, and thorough lighting. A pivotal priority for Chinese families was sunshine and air circulation, and this building delivered that in spades. Outside, both units featured a healthy supplement of deck area, providing fresh views across suburban Remuera, and perfect for letting in air.

Perhaps the most arresting element of this build is the exterior façade. Featuring a unique combination of white vertical weatherboard and orange brick veneer, this striking aesthetic is one of a kind. The brick aesthetic extends to the driveway gate, where it is accented with the same matte black as the long run roofing.

The building’s modernist design is most prominent though its use of clean lines. Square geometry is frequently showcased in its façade, and the flat roofing emphasises its contemporary, minimalist nature. Between, the vertical brick column soundly anchors the façade while also providing an aesthetic division between the units.
