Extensively Revitalised Classrooms

VIKON’s largest educational facility undertaking to date, our extensive work at Southern Cross Campus in Māngere East thoroughly upgraded an incredibly broad range of areas affecting almost every component of the school’s daily operations.

This project at Southern Cross Campus called for a full-scale renovation of 8 different classrooms, as well as extensive upgrades to B-Block’s flooring, roofing, and electrical systems. We also performed upgrades to a variety of toilets, including working with the plumbing and mechanical systems.

One of the largest challenges we faced during this project was upgrading the science classrooms. With the goal of creating fully kitted-out science labs, VIKON aimed to deliver a comprehensive suite of upgrades that modernised and elevated the rooms with new fixtures, hardware, and furniture. This included power, water, and gas supply lines to the workspaces and carefully implemented ventilation and emergency shutdown systems. On top of that, VIKON were also responsible for installing a fume closet and emergency wash unit.

Including the science rooms, VIKON performed wall, floor, and ceiling upgrades to 8 separate classrooms, two of which were converted from an existing staff room. The renovated science and maths rooms saw new vinyl and carpet tiles respectively. All the rooms featured new Autex wall coverings as well as new ceiling tiles. Many of the colours were chosen in close collaboration with the school to create thematically adherent learning environments. In order to accommodate the extensive upgrades, the plumbing, drainage, and waste lines also saw widespread work.

Electrical work was also undertaken across the classrooms to ensure futureproofing and compatibility with a broad array of possible school systems. For example, we oversaw installation of various network, power, and A/V connection units. This included new public address speakers as part of their system.

VIKON also oversaw the supply and installation of numerous windows and doors, with Vistalite’s Pacific41 series making up the bulk of our window choice. An incredible amount of joinery work was also performed by our in-house experts, featuring a thorough supplement of cabinets, benchtops, and fittings.

Our work at Southern Cross Campus was a massive undertaking across numerous sites, calling upon a wide range of disciplines. In many ways, this represented a culmination of the dozens of school projects we’ve worked on. We are incredibly proud of the finished facilities and we hope that they serve the students and staff well.
