Expanding Classrooms While Preserving Historical Essence
In renovating one of Auckland's most storied and historic schools, VIKON took great care when expanding classrooms and installing decking.
Among our first school projects was our undertaking at Parnell District School. This vibrant primary school in coastal Auckland called for a large-scale upgrade of four classrooms, breakout spaces, and outdoor decking.
Chosen to be the primary contractor, VIKON were eager to take on this ambitious renovation. Beginning with the demolition of existing walls, VIKON paved the way for wider openings and the new outdoor space. Many of the sinks, benches, and drinking fountains were also removed or relocated.
The refurbished classrooms touted new carpet tiles, while the cooking spaces featured new vinyl tiles. Both featured a consistent colour scheme of greys and blues in a checkerboard pattern. This enriches the spaces with character while reinforcing the school’s theme. On the walls, VIKON oversaw an extensive implementation of Autex, which came in a similar palette of black and blue.
Outside, the new breakout spaces were comprised of a long stretch of high-quality kwila decking. These connected directly to the newly renovated classrooms and provided the students with a fresh reprieve from being indoors, facilitating learning by establishing a connection with nature.
The construction process also involved a new concrete ramp, complying for New Zealand’s accessible standards, enhancing Parnell District School’s reputation of being accommodating for everyone. Additionally, we also installed outdoor beams, whiteboard units, and a TV. The cooking spaces were also revitalised, featuring new benchtops and stoves.
As one of our first educational projects, and for one of the oldest schools in Auckland, VIKON’s work for Parnell District School was a privilege. We freed up a significant amount of space and upgraded the facilities and interiors, all while preserving the building’s historic essence.
