A Cute Pair of Sibling Homes
For a backyard with a bit too much free room, VIKON designed a pair of beautiful sibling houses.
VIKON helmed the design for this beautiful set of twin homes in a serene West Auckland suburb. The project featured dual detached dwellings in the lot of an existing home. Having all the backyard space, but with nothing to do with it, the homeowner sought a solution that could make the most of what they had.
Both homes feature a two-storey layout with a minimal space footprint. Likewise, they offer similar indoor features, such as an indoor garage, an open kitchen-dining-living area, and a single ground-floor bedroom. The first floor was also similar, touting 2+ bedrooms, plus a master suite. Where they differ, however, is in the appearance, being where both homes diverge, and take on a personality of their own.
Lot 1 features a dual-weatherboard exterior cladding combo, touting a combination of both vertical shiplap and horizontal bevel back. This curious contrast cleverly creates distinction and emphasis in the profile, as the vertical boards take on a backstage role, while at the same time pushing forth the prominent ridges of the bevel back. Of course, it’d be remiss to not mention the prominent brick veneer on the façade, coming in a brilliant medley of terracotta shades.
The second lot sports a subtler, but just as varied combination. A departure from the creamy, sandy tones of lot 1, its paler brother offers snow-coloured weatherboards, again coming in vertical shiplap and horizontal bevel back. There are noticeable levels to the home’s façade, with the misty grey brick veneer being at the forefront, and the entry door being completely recessed.
As if the disparity couldn’t stretch further, lot 1 features not only a ground floor deck, but also a first-floor deck, a trait unique to its structure. Regardless, both homes offer incredible facilities, especially considering their size and location.
