Clever & Compact in Hobsonville

Based in the Hobsonville residential hotspot, this VIKON project demonstrated our ability to design complete full-featured, single-lot homes in a compact space. We applied principles learned from our extensive experience in medium density residences to make sure this build was as accommodating as it could be.

With a site area of 200 square metres – relatively small for a suburban New Zealand lot, VIKON applied efficient design sensibilities to make the most of the space provided. The ground floor featured a sheltered garage for a single car, as well as ample driveway room for another vehicle.

The garage feeds into the dining room, which connects to the lounge and kitchen, the latter of which comes complete with a seriously slick appearance and a full suite of cabinetry. Fancy pendant lights and a glossy midnight splashback give the kitchen an incredibly premium appearance. From the lounge, a sliding door exits to an outdoor deck – perfect for an evening meal. Upstairs features all the bedrooms, which total to four – an impressive number considering the home’s size.

The exterior walls feature white-finished bevel-back weatherboard for an unassuming contemporary look, while the interior walls and ceilings feature 10mm GIB lining for structural soundness and insulation. Asphalt shingles serve as the roofing, with a steel box gutter and fascia by Colorsteel. The windows are double glazed with an aluminium frame.

Outside, a gravelled stepping-stone footpath leads from the deck to the façade. Supporting the first floor, the deck post is also curiously fashioned in the same bevel-back nature found from the cladding, making for a consistent look.

With the home itself taking up less than half of the total lot area, VIKON’s expertise shone here through our efficient use of space, creating a highly capable residence with a feature suite that rivals larger homes.
